Creating joy and inclusivity at Christmas
December 15th:
I was very excited to bring two of my passions together when forming a Sign Choir for Christmas carols. It was wonderful to have students from various extracurricular societies that I have become involved with here join together for a fun and focused afternoon/evening. After rehearsing for two hours, we had learned two songs with harmonies and two with backing, all using sign language. We then caught the bus to the Manchester markets to share our performance. Sign language choirs play a crucial role in promoting inclusivity, cultural understanding, and communication diversity. They help break down barriers, foster community, and advocate for the rights and recognition of the deaf community.
I am extremely grateful to the University of Manchester British Sign Language and the Barbershop Society for supporting my dream, as well as all the friends who joined and encouraged us, including the Folk and Ceilidh Society and Manchester Cathedral.
Through the completion of two Auslan certificates my passion for sign has grow and the idea for this choir came from a wonderful afternoon I spent with a Sign choir in Townsville earlier this year. I was thrilled to learn about the size and impact of the Liverpool Sign Choir through the BSL society president's experience with them.
